As the European city with the largest Palestinian diaspora, Berlin emerged as a major hub of solidarity during Israel’s ongoing genocide on Gaza under Netanyahu’s government. Tens of thousands of civilians have marched through the city, confronting a state apparatus determined to enforce its Staatsräson—Germany’s declared reason of state—which entails unconditional political, military, and diplomatic support for Israel. The German government has articulated this position clearly, providing weapons, media backing, and legal defense, including its intervention at the International Court of Justice against charges of genocide brought against Israel. On the streets, this stance has translated into an increasingly violent crackdown on dissent. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been met with systematic violations of human rights, restrictions on democratic freedoms, and excessive use of police force, disproportionately targeting BIPOC protesters and women. The work traces a wide range of demonstrations, sit-ins, and university occupations, all sharing a common denominator: repression through police violence, surveillance, and mass arrests for chanting slogans or merely being present at legally sanctioned protests. Since October 2023, legal organizations estimate roughly 17,000 arrests related to Palestine protests in Berlin alone—signaling a dangerous authoritarian shift and the normalization of fascistic practices across Europe. Pressure refers to the tension between citizens and the state, bodies pushed tightly together in public space. The body becomes the site where democratic struggle unfolds, where individuals risk their safety and freedom in refusal to remain complicit in genocide. While the work foregrounds state violence, it equally emphasizes civilian steadfastness—an awareness that what is at stake is not only Palestine, but the preservation of personal freedom and resistance to the resurgence of legitimized fascism. composition of an utopian mosaic. It is the creation of an imaginary place through the documentation of real eco-communities that are camouflaged within the European landscape. These communities are not withdrawn from society, but exist at its cultural and political periphery — quiet zones of experimentation where the social imagination is allowed to stretch, bend, and reshape itself. The project emerges from an impulse to map what is still possible in a time of exhaustion, to rediscover the fragments of a different world already germinating within the cracks of the present one.To Begin Again refuses the monumental image of revolution that seeks to overturn the entire social order at once. Instead, it leans toward the subtle, the microscopic, the interpersonal. It turns its gaze to small, self-sustainable micro-systems that resonate with natural laws — places where people experiment with reconnection, mutual support, and the slow rhythm of the earth. In this sense, the project can be understood as an exploration of micro-utopias: lived experiments in coexistence that function as both critique and proposition.The work originates from a journey across Europe, tracing communities that have consciously stepped aside from the dominant narrative of commodity culture. These are enclaves where the logic of production, consumption, and profit is replaced by other values: collective care, ecological awareness, and spiritual renewal. The documentation of these spaces becomes both an act of witnessing and an act of invention. The camera does not merely record what exists; it collaborates with the landscape and its inhabitants in constructing an imaginary geography. Each frame is a fragment of an impossible map, a mosaic of utopian fragments scattered across the continent.In a time marked by ecological collapse and political fragmentation, utopian thinking may seem naïve, even obsolete. Yet the project reclaims utopia not as a fantasy of perfection but as a vital practice — a way of continually reimagining the conditions of living together. It invites us to rethink utopia as a verb, not a noun; as something we do, not something we reach. The communities documented in To Begin Again become laboratories of this ongoing practice. authoritarian measures adopted by governments worldwide in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, it examines the strict curfew imposed in Italy, where citizens were prohibited from leaving their homes except for essential reasons. While many public health experts considered these restrictions necessary to contain the spread of the virus, some scientists and commentators have since questioned whether certain measures were fully grounded in scientific evidence. This debate raises broader concerns about the motivations behind emergency policies and the democratic risks associated with exceptional governmental powers during times of crisis. The images in this project were taken in my hometown, Marsala, located in Sicily, Italy, during the period of strict lockdown. Through these photographs, the work explores the tension between public safety and individual freedom, documenting the atmosphere of isolation, control, and uncertainty that defined daily life under curfew. a love story. First there is the acquaintance, followed by a desire to repeat the meeting over and over again till the rituality of the encounters makes it a perpetual present, a cyclical flow with no end in sight. My fascination for the man in Muinkpark happened by chance as I used to pass through the park to go to my then lover. One day, intrigued by the presence of this man who was sitting everyday on the right side of the bench and available to whoever wished to have a talk, I stopped on the bridge crossing the park’s lake and contemplating his presence in a meditative state, I spontaneously took a photograph of him immersed in the green scenery. From then on, that gesture of stopping by the bridge and taking a photo of Joao had become my personal ritual, a minute to breathe and being present. Seasons passed by and I’d take every chance to secretly meet my friend, secretly because we actually never talked. Ironically and sadly, the week I had collected these photos to finally show them to him Covid started. Eventually I definitely left Ghent the following summer and never saw him again as well as my then lover. When I revisited Ghent in the Summer 22’ I headed to the park to sadly realise that even the bench was no longer there. Like a love story there is that melancholy of something gone forever, just the memory of what was a perpetual present, both temporarily and a gift. Way to Love also refers to Joao’s attitude and availability to others, his loving and compassionate presence for others, such a beautiful way of being in the world. I saw many people crying on his shoulder, having a laugh with him or being whispered who knows what in their ears. The act of photographing made me pay attention to an almost non-scene and see grandeur in those tiny gestures of presence, the repetition of that act strengthened my interest for this series and the man, a bit like the Little Prince taking care of his rose. of illness and its aftermath on my body and psyche. I woke up one morning, a few days after my 26th birthday, with an ache in my knee that came out of the blue. By the evening I had to run to the ER for morphine and had to repeat the same for the following three days to cope with an unspeakable pain, which clearly was an alarming sign of what was about to come into my life. It took four months to receive a wrong diagnosis—too optimistic indeed—followed by an unnecessary surgery, before the final diagnosis became clear: osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer that generally affects young people. There was a sense of paralysis, then a strange excitement, followed by so many whys. I underwent a second surgery: part of my tibia and my knee were removed and replaced with a prosthetic bone and knee. I woke up on a metal bed after nine hours of imposed sleep, during which my consciousness wandered through the mystery of the ether. "It was a beautiful experience" were my first words, before fully reentering my body and coming to terms with a pain that felt like torture. Such extreme pain changed something in my psyche that I am not able to explain through words, and it took many years to recollect parts of myself that felt gone forever. The images portray a symbolic catharsis of endurance, surrender, loneliness, and healing. Metamorphosis certainly refers to the physical and spiritual transformation I had no choice but to embark on, navigating through compression, similar to a rebirth. Photographed with a phone during 100 post-surgery sleepless nights, the act of photographing was a way to crystallize externally an intensity within—a way not to go insane and to make sense of the surreal life I felt no longer in control of. Photographing that time in my life was also a reminder that such a situation was temporary, a way to prove to myself that I could still create something beautiful out of it. Metamorphosis also reconnects to Kafka’s story, in which the character becomes a burden to family and friends. I felt trapped in a Kafkaesque situation, in which I saw many previously close people disappear, turning their backs in my most fragile moments. Such betrayal became a strong fuel to regain strength and to find my own center, my own ground. It made me love more deeply those few who stayed, and it taught me so much about the human psyche, about love and family. It also made my values and sense of self-worth much firmer and uncompromising. But above all, this metamorphosis was a sort of initiation into a new paradigm of understanding: we are the creators of our own lives. Challenges are not failures but redirections. We might not control what challenges come to us, but we always have a choice in how we face them. Illness can be a gift for transformation, and love is the only medicine that truly counts.
