Curfew is a project reflecting on the drastic authoritarian measures adopted by governments worldwide in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, it examines the strict curfew imposed in Italy, where citizens were prohibited from leaving their homes except for essential reasons.

While many public health experts considered these restrictions necessary to contain the spread of the virus, some scientists and commentators have since questioned whether certain measures were fully grounded in scientific evidence. This debate raises broader concerns about the motivations behind emergency policies and the democratic risks associated with exceptional governmental powers during times of crisis.

The images in this project were taken in my hometown, Marsala, located in Sicily, Italy, during the period of strict lockdown. Through these photographs, the work explores the tension between public safety and individual freedom, documenting the atmosphere of isolation, control, and uncertainty that defined daily life under curfew.
